Press Release — Atash returns to downtown Austin for weekly residency at Flamingo Cantina

PRESS RELEASE (August 2015) — ATASH Returns to Downtown Austin for Weekly Residency at Flamingo Cantina

UPDATE (January 2016):  Since beginning its residency at Flamingo in October, the popularity of the event has grown, creating a one-of-a-kind scene in downtown Austin.  Regular fixtures at the event include the beautiful dancers who share the stage, such as Kiersten Valence, Genevieve Monroig, and Lexi Schooley.  Occasionally other bands have followed Atash, such as the U.S./Pakistan world fusion ensemble Sangat, the Japan/Chile urban-ethnic trio Wanaku Beat, the local improvisation band Hatch, and, of course the Global EDM of Sunray Project.  Atash merchandise and worldbeat apparel is available at the shows through Texwador.

URGENT:  Austin Music Poll is online now through February 1 2016.  We humbly request that you for Atash as Best World Music Band.

One of the great institutions that has shaped the life of the Austin music is the weekly band residency, where the passion for music serves as a dynamic catalyst for the building of communities and subcultures.  Austin audiences may remember the Red Fez, a cavernous Moroccan-themed club in the warehouse district, where, on-and-off from 2002 until its sudden closing in 2011, Atash reverberated weekly amid the fragrant clouds of hookah smoke and ecstatic dancers and spectators.  For many, it was a ritual which inspired friendship, romance, and a camaraderie among a highly eclectic, international group of Austinites that defied categorization.  Meanwhile, the band grew tighter and more telepathic, developing an almost shamanic interaction with the crowd, and earning new legions of fans in the process.  The weekly ritual has been sorely missed by the musicians and fans alike since Red Fez closed its door in July of 2011.

Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we announce the next chapter in the band’s love affair with its hometown, a weekly residency downtown at the iconic Flamingo Cantina on Sixth Street, every Tuesday night!  The Flamingo, Angela Tharp’s brainchild, was established in 1993 to provide a spot for Austinites to enjoy “good vibes music” – reggae, ska, latin and worldbeat, along with rock hiphop, alternative and more.  The friendly atmosphere is a fantastic setting for international music, and has hosted an eclectic range of artists from around the world, offering the warm sound of its top-of-the-line analog system, ample dancefloor downstairs and an awesome open-air deck for chilling upstairs.  Grammy-winners and international sensations such as Burning Spear, members of the Bob Marley family, Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loka, Thomas Mapfumo (Zimbabwe), the Skatalites (Jamaica), Jarabe de Palo (Barcelona), Los Texmaniacs with Flaco Jimenez and many others have graced this stage in the heart of the Red River Cultural District.

Doors will open at 9pm and Atash will hit the stage at 10pm.  After Atash rocks, the last portion of the evening will continue the “good vibes” with Global Grooves EDM, a consortium of world music DJs and musicians, hosted by the Sunray Project.  Cover charge is only $5.
